A vibrant kaleidoscope of multi-platform design has taken up residence inside the College of Fine Arts Faye G. The failure of a tool, he says, is not an excuse to not finish a piece—you have to find a way around it. Our show reflects that, as we reclaim any errors that the printer has made. What happens when the technology creates an unexpected or erratic result? What serendipitous discoveries and surprise errors occur?

STRATA: LESSONS IN LATENCY
Lahey is one of three dozen College of Fine Arts graduate students, 11 painters, 4 sculptors, and 21 graphic designers, whose work is in the MFA Thesis Exhibitions , two separate shows on view through April Lahey says she got the idea for her thesis project after her father asked her what her sculptures were for, besides being looked at. She began thinking about the connection between fine art and design. The goal was to make something that was interactive. Every item is made by hand: the wooden frames for the chairs, the tetrahedral pillows sewn onto the furniture, and each of the 2,plus pom-poms. Seuss quotes. When you pick up one of the nearby sets of headphones, you can hear her recalling memories, lip-synching hymns, singing Kings of Leon songs.
Graphic Design (MFA)
For centuries, poets have used layered rhetorical devices to seduce, persuade, and create beauty in their words. For my thesis, I developed a system called Verse Patterns to underscore the layering of rhetorical figures in any piece of poetry. Since graphic design is about typography, organization, and elucidating information, it is the perfect medium to reveal the nuances in literature that are often overlooked.
In the MFA Design program at the Academy of Art we are challenged to find a problem and design a solution for our masters thesis. I began this process in when social media was becoming an ever increasing part of our lives. In a world where we were creating data at an unprecedented pace I asked where that data went and who exactly can see it. In researching digital privacy and the legacy we are building by recording our lives I came to realize that the children growing up now are the first who have the potential to have every milestone, event and development recorded.
